Question #1: How do I know if I have a transmission problem?
Answer: The first step would be to check your transmission fluid. You will need to check the level, the color, and the smell. If the level is low it can cause the transmission to slip. If the color is brown or amber, it might indicate the temperature of the transmission is running too high. If you detect a burning smell, then it might be a sign that the transmission is failing. Another thing to look for is your “check engine” light. If this is on, it might indicate an electronic problem.
Question #2: Why won’t any transmission repair shop ever give me a clear price on the phone?
Answer: Just as a doctor cannot diagnose a patient over the phone, neither can you diagnose a transmission problem over the phone. A transmission repair facility must see the vehicle to begin the diagnostic process. Some of the descriptive words we hear on the phone: “ping,” “clang,” “sputter,” “jolt,” “slips,” “hesitates,” “won’t shift,” and “doesn’t move” can mean different things to different people. These terms do not specify where a problem might be.
Question #3: Is a road test always necessary?
Answer: Yes, a road test is the first step to proper diagnosis. This determines if the problem exists in the transmission or another part of the car.
